Happy Birthday Em

Stop the clock, I wanna get off!

Fifteen years has brought us from smocked dresses to ripped jeans and I am not ready!

Fifteen years ago, I was in unfamiliar territory...

I mean, OK, the hospital was familiar, the unattractive and well ventilated hospital gowns were familiar, the really uncomfortable pillows were familiar and the awesome nurses were sweetly familiar and such a comfort to me.

But...

after 3 boys...

this whole girl thing was totally unfamiliar.

I mean, OK, I am a girl so that was familiar but I had never raised a girl!!!

Totally unfamiliar...

Sort of๐Ÿ˜‰

and so totally awesome!

I mean after 3 loud, rowdy, burping boys...

I now had a sweet, quiet, dainty little girl...

who can burp with the best of  'em...

and whose Dad totally encourages her because that will certainly keep the boys away...

Yeah right...

Sigh๐Ÿ˜‰

Without warning, 15 years has slipped past and the little sister with three bigger brothers is now threatening to "out height" them and I am not ready...

My precious one, your delightful innocence is weaved throughout your beautiful maturity. Your heart is full of love and laughter and compassion and broken-ness as the Lord has already opened your eyes and burdened your heart for this fallen world.

He has entrusted you with much baby girl and I am overwhelmed watching  as God's plan captivates every ounce of you.

"God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day." Psalm 46:5

Trust in that sweet one and whether easy or not, the rest will flow.

Happy Birthday baby girl!

Deep Calls to Deep

Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
Psalm 42:7

Depth...

I recognize it in her.

The quiet that permeates speaks volumes to me as we occupy her silence.

The unspoken words and the tears, not allowed to fall, are so familiar to me.

There is a knowing that we share, a knowing that hurts and sets apart but it is a knowing that transforms.

Most don't "know" her because they only see what she allows them to and there is so . much . more.

She steps in silently, many times before I have even recognized the need because, unlike me at that age, she is not swimming against those strong currents that threaten to fully consume her heart. They frighten her but she is not afraid.

Her shyness overshadows the charm that is reserved for the fortunate few who persevere.

She requires work but what you receive is an invitation to a heart that is full and ready to give.

At 14 years old, she is embracing the heart she was given - something that took me 40+ years to yield to.

Her beautiful blend of timidity and confidence endears her to those who look past her surroundings to really see her and her acts of grace, which are so natural for her that they are not spectacular, but just a part of her.

She laughs at herself - something that I still have not yielded to๐Ÿ˜‰

I know her humility and it will help her at times and hinder her at others but she is learning to walk by faith.

It is a delicate balance to traverse the path between this world and the next. Sometimes the dance between the two is seamless, gracefully flowing in harmony as you influence without loosing your own footing. Sometimes it less like a dance and more like a tug of war as you choose between the moment and the word

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

My dearest Emmeline, the Lord has entrusted you with much...

"you were made for such a time as this"

Continue to release your heart and loose your "self" in the dance that He has so beautifully choreographed for you.

Happy 13th Em

So we have entered into another dimension...

the teenage girl dimension...

you know that outer body experience that leaves you wondering how in the world you ever made it out alive and in awe of your parents great patience and restraint!!!

Good gracious, if it weren't for "sassy', there would be no attitude at all!!

*grin*

But behind the sas...

is a heart that is receptive and yielding...

a spirit that is especially tender yet incredibly strong.

Teenage girlhood has brought along with it, makeup and hair styles and fashion and friends...

so so different than the snips and snails and puppy dog tails... as well as the burping and the wrestling and the pegging and the megging that I am used to!

Hubby is currently planning his escape hatch and hideout in the back yard as the surge in estrogen around here seriously frightens him!

Which is fine with me, as long as there is room for two...  and a wine fridge!

*hehe*

Oh well, we survived teenage boys...

I suppose we will survive teenage girls too...

Especially because our very first teenage girl loves kitties...

and doggies

and babies

and old(er) people

To steal a quote, raising teenagers can be a bit "like nailing Jell-o to a tree"...

but I think, in the end, what falls away, should, and what sticks is oh so sweet!

Happy 13th birthday baby girl!

The Question

Can my eyes be cured...

That was the question waiting for me on Google translate.

Em was helping to translate for Will as I drove them all to karate. Her face fell as she showed me Will's translated question, her eyes locked with mine as we both soaked in the hope behind this question and fought back tears as the immense-ness of the reality of the moment sunk in .

We haven't had to use the translator in a while but this question, he wanted to get right. He was excited to ask it and as he sat in the backseat anticipating my reply, I gathered myself yet again and dug deep for a voice that didn't tremble, a voice that held hope but hope that was intertwined with his reality.

He was waiting and he was listening but so were Em and Lucy and Maggie. My girls, his sweet sisters, knew, but as my answer hung heavy in the moment, the four of us somehow wished that answer could be different.

How hard it is to watch a heart break, to witness hope diminish. It would be so easy to get stuck here but the Lord steps in. He teaches me so much in the midst of the heartbreak and the hopelessness. He redeems all of it, every single heart break, every single drop of hope lost...

These kids y'all, how the Lord has used them to mold and shape me, to work on my selfish heart, to understand what it means to love like Jesus and what it means to BE loved BY Jesus.

While our culture concerns itself over picking just the right schools or which caterer to use for the Christmas party or finding just the right fabric for the drapes in the den or the Acura over the BMW or finding the perfect, matching smocked outfits for the school picture or granite counter tops vs quartz or whether to vacation in Hawaii or Disney this year or maybe we should buy all organic foods...

Meanwhile...

There are millions of children who will never go to school, much less the "right" school.

There are millions of children who will never have a Christmas, much less a catered Christmas party.

There are millions of children who will never have a home to hang drapes in.

There are millions of children who will never even own a car.

There are millions of children who will never have their own clothes, much less perfect smocked outfits.

There are millions of children who would love to be able to live in a real home, regardless of the counter tops, granite or otherwise.

There are millions of children who don't even know what a vacation is.

There are millions of children who are wondering if they will eat today and don't care if it is organic or not. They are STARVING!

I am honestly not trying to condemn or to point fingers or to guilt anyone into anything but our kids, these gifts from God, have served as a wake up call for our family and while we are still very guilty of stressing over worldly things, we are a little more able to see the things that are truly important.

We don't always get it right but we try a little harder now.  Our kids have shown us what true perseverance and trust looks like and we will never look at the world, or our lives, the same again...

At least I hope we don't because the hard that we have stepped into has awakened us from our "American Dream" and has revealed a world in which there is pain but it is from this pain that great joy is born.

Will will likely never see our faces...

and Lucy will probably never walk with ease...

and Maggie will possibly always battle her body...

and Lizzie will never be able to change her beginnings...

and while all of these realities are hard, they have allowed us to feel, I mean really feel, a down to the depths of our souls kind of feel and oh the conversations we have had and the prayers we have prayed and the transformations that have followed.

Yep, that question, that one simple but shattering question was difficult to answer...

but I did...

and I am certain the answer was difficult to hear...

but he did...

and we both survived and took one more step closer to each other and to Him.

Birthday Shopping CAN be Fun!

Tomorrow, we go to celebrate the 2 beautiful Emmeline's in my life!

My Mom

and my daughter

Their birthdays are both in March and while Em's was, ahem, at the beginning of the month, Mom's is at the end, so we head to Mom's tomorrow to celebrate both Emmelines, one late and one a bit early!

In true "mom of 5 kids" style, I waited until today to shop for a gift for my sweet mother!  Most of the kids had the day off from school, so off we went to my mother's favorite place on earth!

The plant store!

The kids tried to talk me into Walmart, cause did you know that they have plants too!  They do, really - along with lots of toys!  How convenient!!!!

Nope, plants from Walmart just will not do for my Mom, the master gardener!

As soon as we arrived, the toys, or lack of toys, were forgotten as they explored the beauty of the place

and our Em's final choice...

Pink Hydrangeas, of course!!

and after all that exploring, it was time for...

ICE CREAM!!!

It was a fun afternoon and I am looking forward to tomorrow and to celebrating the two beautiful Emmeline's in my life, one who is now 5 and one who is just a teeeeeensy bit older!!!!  Hehe!

Love you both!
